Welcome to UBa: 7 Things No One Tells You Before You Arrive
So you're coming to the University of Bamenda. Congratulations! You've made it this far.
But let me be real with you for a moment. The brochure didn't tell you everything. The welcome package they gave you? It's missing a few chapters. And the seniors? They'll tell you stories, but they usually leave out the parts that would actually help you survive.
I've been through it all. I've run from one department to another getting signatures. I've dealt with the late-night panic of a printer that stopped working at 11pm. I've sat in a lecture hall wondering if the professor was actually teaching or just reading from a book from 2005.
And I survived.
So here is my gift to you. A real, unfiltered guide to what UBa is actually like, and how to not just survive, but actually enjoy your time here.
1. How Lectures Actually Work at UBa
Let's clear this up right now. Lectures are not like the movies. Here is the reality:
Attendance: Some lecturers take attendance every single class. Others don't. The trick is to figure out which ones care within the first two weeks. If they start calling names on the first day, show up. If they don't, you still need to show up because they will have surprise tests.
Timetables: The timetable you get on the first day is a suggestion. It will change. Classes get moved. Rooms get changed. Some classes start at 7am. Some at 5pm. Prepare for anything.
Night Classes: Yes, they exist. You will have lectures at 7pm in the cold Bambili weather. Bring a sweater. Bring a flask. Bring a friend to keep you awake.
What to bring to every lecture:
- A notebook (you will need it)
- A pen (obvious, but you will forget)
- A fully charged phone (for photos of the board)
- Snacks (trust me on this one)
2. The Academic Calendar: When Deadlines Hit and When to Panic
The UBa academic calendar is not something you glance at once and forget. It is your roadmap. Here are the key moments you need to know:
Week 1-3: Everything is calm. You feel like you've got this. Do not be fooled. Use this time to read ahead. Buy your textbooks. Get your materials ready.
Week 4-6: Assignments start pouring in. This is when you realize that first week was a trap. You need to start your projects now, not the night before.
Week 7-9: Mid-semester exams. This is when the panic hits. You will see students running around like their lives depend on it. This is also when FavourLand gets busiest because everyone suddenly needs printing and binding.
Week 10-12: Final assignments and projects. This is the danger zone. Sleep becomes a suggestion. Coffee becomes a meal.
Week 13-15: Exams. This is when you either shine or cry. Make sure you have everything printed, bound, and ready.
Pro tip: Mark every assignment deadline on your phone the day you receive it. Do not wait. Your future self will thank you.
3. The UBa Shuffle: Running Between Departments
You will hear about it before you experience it. The UBa Shuffle is the exhausting reality of getting signatures, clearing forms, and dealing with university bureaucracy.
What it involves:
- Going to one office to get a signature
- Being told to go to another office
- Being told to go back to the first office because the person is absent
- Repeat until you contemplate dropping out (don't, you'll be fine)
How to survive the UBa Shuffle:
- Start early in the morning
- Bring snacks and water
- Wear comfortable shoes
- Take photos of everything you submit
- Don't expect to get everything done in one day
Pro tip: Make friends with someone in the faculty office. I'm serious. A friendly face can save you hours.
4. Navigating the Admin System
The UBa admin system is where things get real. Registration. Transcripts. Faculty offices. It's all here and it's all confusing.
Online Registration: You will need to register online for most things. Have your student ID ready. Know your login details. The system crashes sometimes, so don't wait until the last day.
Transcripts: Need a transcript? Be prepared to wait. Order it early. Pay the fee. Check back often. Sometimes they get "lost". Always ask for a receipt.
Faculty Offices: Find your faculty office early. Know where it is. Know who works there. Be polite to the staff—they can make your life easier or harder.
Pro tip: Keep a folder with all your important documents. You will thank yourself when you need to find something quickly.
5. Student Life: Clubs, Events, and the Social Scene
UBa is not just about studying. There is a whole life waiting for you outside the lecture halls.
Clubs: There are clubs for everything. Sports, religion, politics, games, you name it. Join something. It's how you meet people and build a life outside of academics.
Events: There are events happening all the time. Gospel concerts. Sports competitions. Department events. Go to them. Even if you go alone, you will meet people.
The Social Scene: Bambili is small but there's always something happening. People are friendly. Make friends with your classmates. Make friends with the people in your hall. Your social network is your support system.
Pro tip: Don't be the person who stays in their room all day. You will regret it after graduation.
6. The Strike Reality
Here's something nobody tells you about university in Cameroon: strikes happen. They are a reality. And they will affect your academic year.
What to expect:
- Strikes can happen suddenly
- The semester might be extended
- Exams might be postponed
- You will need to be patient
How to prepare:
- Don't panic when a strike starts
- Keep studying anyway
- Stay in contact with your classmates
- Use the extra time to get ahead on assignments
Pro tip: FavourLand stays open during strikes. If you need to print, bind, or get work done, we are here.
7. What Nobody Tells You About Bambili
Bambili is a unique place. It's not like Bamenda town. It's quieter, colder, and somehow more intense.
The Cold: Yes, it's cold. Bring warm clothes. The harmattan wind will catch you off guard. Buy a hoodie, a jacket, and a blanket.
The Food: There are plenty of places to eat. Find the spots that students love. Ask around. You'll find affordable meals that will keep you going.
The Internet: MTN and Camtel are your options. Sometimes they work. Sometimes they don't. Prepare for downtime.
The Safety: Bambili is generally safe, but always be smart. Don't walk alone at night. Lock your room. Look out for each other.
